Just what to do you have to do to be a veterinary surgeon?
What does the job of being a vet involve? Obviously you treat injured animals, but is there is more to it than that?
It can take just as long to become a veterinary surgeon as it can to become a docotor, as after school you need to attend four years of college and then four years of veterinary school to begin with. Getting a placement at an animal hospital can help with credit, but it wont make your time any shorter actually in college. Competiton will be tough to get into a veterinary college, as there are only 28. Other than the diseases you will be learning about all the different animals you may be treating during your career. Where a human doctor will only have to learn about human anatomy, a vet has to know about different spieces -cats, rats, dogs, guinea pigs, hamsters, and others. Thats before youve even thought about considering whether to make one animal spieces a priority. Quite similar to the bar exam in law is the final exam in veterinary school, as without it you legally cant treat animals. Choose with some thought where you take your state exam, as it doesnt allow you to also practice your veterinary skills in the other states.
Vets also have to keep as up to date as they possibly can on all the new methods and techinques to best serve their patients. What may surpise people is that vets also have to take an oath, exactly like doctors, pledging to do their best to help all animals. The worst thing about being a vet is putting down animals that you cant help -its hard to do. If you cant get to grips with that fact, being a vet isnt the career move for you.
Think you’ve now found your ideal job? Good luck on the road to becoming the best vet that you can be.
