Attracting Wild Birds to Your Garden

You can make your garden attractive to wild birds in many different ways. A safe place to feed and food they like is the easiest way. Bird feeders are ideal for providing food for them. Natural sources of food are scarce in the winter so they can be really helpful to the birds.

Attract different wild bird species by putting out their favorite foods. For example finches feed on small thistle seeds and specially designed bird feeders that allow the finches to feed easily can be purchased. You can keep seeds dry and stop them spilling on the ground by using tube feeders. A window bird feeder could also be used to watch wild birds feed from the comfort of your home.

You can purchase bird feeders specially designed for woodpeckers, goldfinches and hummingbirds. Place in a safe place close to your bird house to attract the birds. Whichever type of feeder you use be sure to check it regularly to ensure the food is dry and free from mold. Pests such as ants and wasps will be attracted to spilled food so clean it up every day.

Feeding during the winter is most beneficial for wild birds but shortages occur during other seasons as well. Shortages can occur at any time of year so put out food to help them whatever the season. Food suitable for fledglings should be provided during the breeding season as shortages can have a severe effect on them.

Provide pans of water or bird baths for a safe place for them to drink, preen and clean their feathers. Water should be provided at different levels for different species of birds. Fill shallow containers or pans with water and place away from the noise of birds feeding at your bird feeders. Running water sounds will attract the birds. Water drippers are great for attracting birds and they also deter mosquitoes from breeding in the water.

The birds will have a better sense of security if you provide a natural environment. Leaving an area to grow with wild flowers and plants can provide a very attractive area for them.
