Steps to Finding the Perfect Mastiff
Are you looking for that perfect Mastiff puppy? You feel the Mastiff is just the best dog that ever (we concur whole-heartedly!). You need the perfect Mastiff puppy to become part of your family
But the question is: Just where to you start?
Your first instinct, of course, is to search locally. And that’s not a bad idea. By all means look around for a Mastiff locally. But don’t let proximity of breeder be the tipping point in your adopting your new friend. A good dog is definitely worth traveling for.
By all means, check the paper. Then visit some dog shows. Show dog owners may be breeders or may know of some quality breeders. Show dog owners will be happy to guide you in your quest for your Mastiff pup.
Why would a show dog owner want to share their knowledge? Several reasons: they just love Mastiffs and are committed to the breed, they want quality maintained in Mastiff bloodlines, and they enjoy bragging on their baby! Collect information about breeders so you’ll have a list from which to research.
As you talk to breeders, you’ll get a feel for their commitment and ethics. Believe what your instinct is telling you. If you get a “bad feeling” check that breeder off your list.
If the breeder is too worried about the monetary value of the dog, then perhaps his commitment and love of the breed isn’t quite strong enough. But if you can’t stop the breeder from bragging about the bloodline, or how “adorable” or smart or “picture perfect” his pups are . . . well, you might have hit upon a high-quality breeder. You’ll also have a sense of his reputation, by the way he allays your fears or doubts about your new venture.
Don’t rush these phone calls. Your puppy will be with you for a very long time .
Find out how long he’s bred Mastiffs, what he loves about the breed. Depending on your interest, you’ll want to know if his Mastiffs are show dogs or pets. Ask about issues particular to the breed such as property needs and health issues.
Also, expect the breeder to ask as many questions or more than you. Expect to be interrogated–that’s a good sign.
You’ll have narrowed your choices down to a few good breeders. You may have to wait a while, which is difficult but good in the end. Dog breeders sell their puppies on a first-come first-choice basis. If you feel the wait is more than you can bear, check down your list for the next breeder. But remember, patience is a virtue when if comes to finding the right Mastiff.
Finally, you get that call you’ve been waiting for. The babies are ready for viewing. By the time you get a chance to view your potential new baby, he’ll probably be eight to ten weeks old. At this age, the puppies will easily display their various personalities. You’ll also be able to see how these little guys (relatively speaking) interact with you and your family.
Oh, yes, by all means take the entire family to this viewing session. It’s absolutely essential right from the start that each member of your family has a chance to participate in this decision.
Of course, your decison will be based on your plans for your Mastiff. Do you want to raise Mastiffs? Are you interested in a show dog, if that’s the case make sure you select a dog that exhibits the proper characteristics.
On the other hand, if you want a dog who is going to be a loyal family pet, then it’s not as important that the dog meets all the physical criteria of the breed. You’re looking for the most lovable pup in the litter.
Now that you’ve made your decision, all that’s left is making the final arrangements on the price, and eventually taking him home with you. Be aware that depending on your pup’s age, you may not take him home on that visit. No, don’t be too disappointed. After all, you’ve waited this long, haven’t you? Besides, the delay gives you time to get the house prepared for him.
Have a great time with your new puppy!
